Skills Development for the Young
TARGET – Those who possess the will to better their livelihoods but do not have the resources to match their enthusiasm. Those employed can also be assisted as they often find themselves unable to expand upon their talents due to a variety of factors including, limited skills, lack of equipment, lack of education, poor marketing capacity – basically those things that require an investment that many do not have. E.O.L will seek to provide – skills, equipment and a variety of career options that they may not have considered.
SKILLS – Graduates will be targeted to structure courses seeking to provide skills that can be used to generate an income. We will thus use young people to teach other young people inspiring them to do just as well as their peers if given the same opportunities. The way forward should not be structured around large capital investments but rather around skills development.
Course option 1 – a graduate of interior design or fine art can teach the basics of creative products production. Beadwork, canvas art, creative clothing – possibilities are endless. The students can use what they have learnt to make goods cheaply and offer them for sale at flea markets. This course should appeal to youth that posses a creative talent but have been unable to explore the possibilities due to negative financial circumstances.
Course option 2 – young horticulturalists can structure a course seeking to expand the basic abilities known by young gardeners. Lawn mowing and other basic garden care are often offered by the youth who try to generate an income. If these youth are taught to broaden their green knowledge then they will have more to offer the public. People would be willing to pay more if a potential gardener can offer to not only neaten the garden but grow a variety of plants; this could include flowers, trees and vegetables.
Course option 3 – engineering and science graduates can be used to teach the basics concerning home maintenance. If a young man had the knowledge he can go from house to house and offer to fix appliances that many simply don’t have the time fix. Toasters, kettles, heaters, switches and any other items that are only in need of a simple repair. The boys can then go on to offer household repairs, peeling paint can be restored, cupboard doors, dripping taps, rusty doors and any other thing in the home that no longer works properly.
The aim of this project is to ensure that able bodies and minds no longer lay idle. The young are targeted as they are the group that can be most easily galvanised into action. This because the hardships of life may not have ushered them to stand before ‘give ups’ door yet, all thanks to the spirit of youthful optimism. Our aim is to catch the young before this spirit dies and fuel the fire in them that says… ‘Yes I can!’
